Irene M Jencius of Bay Ridge Brooklyn passed peacefully at home on February 12 th 2020. In her own words, Irene was a happy child whose emotional side earned the nickname Niagara Falls As a rebellious teen, she had tons of fun. She grew up, had a daughter, led an ethical life, earned a living and provided a nice middle class
life. Irene did the best she could, overcoming many obstacles along the way. She loved Katrina immensely. Irene loved music, art, baseball and travel. She loved her daughter and her mother Adele more, considering them best friends. A Strategic Operations Buyer at Coty, Irene was known for her hard work, analytical mind and common sense approach to problem solving. She was well respected in the industry and loved by family and friends. She will be missed. Irene is survived by her daughter Katrina, siblings Kathryn Loggie (Dennis), Nancy Knutsen (James) and Peter Jencius along with nephews and a niece.

My dear Irene,
I landed in NY on Feb 2018 for a new experience away from my home land. I was both excited and a little bit disoriented as being away from home never comes easy. I didn't know back then but being seated next to you would become the best thing that could have happened to me. On the first couple of days that I've met you you've been nothing but the amazing human being that you were. You've been so kind to take the time to show me around and to make sure that I had everything I needed to work and feel comfortable; you made me laugh to tears by smashing your desk phone at least a 100 times in 2 days; and finally you showed me how caring your could be by handing me your personal phone on the Friday telling me to call you during the weekend if I needed to be bailed out of jail because you knew that I was all alone there (and it, again, made me laugh to tears). I was 26 and you were 60 and yet we happened to develop a great friendship over time.
I could go on and on about all the memories and funny stories I have with you but the most important thing that I will keep is that you're a legend Irene Jencius. You're just a kind and caring human being who made people life better just by being part of it. And gosh, you were so funny!!! Thank you for everything. I love you.

I'm sending my deepest condolences to Katrina and family. All my thoughts are with you through this difficult period.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Katrina and family. Irene was a trusted colleague, but more importantly, a dear friend. My trips to CitiField just won't be the same, knowing she is not in the Promenade cheering for her beloved Mets.

My deepest condolences to Irene’s family. I was Katrina’s roommate at Oswego. My family will forever treasure visiting her and Katrina this past Thanksgiving. She took the time to show us the Empire State Building and point out all of the sights. She gave us the VIP NYC experience of the ESB. Even though we were in the middle of a city of millions the time we all spent together with her and Katrina felt like we were the only ones there. It was nice to see her later that week at Katrina’s place as well. I have many memories of her at Oswego with Katrina. There was a time I went to visit Katrina and had planned to go to my first Mets game and I developed a medical issue and couldn’t walk. She came over and drove me to the Mets game. Irene was a strong, caring and amazing person to know.

Our deepest condolences to Irene’s family and friends, and especially Katrina. Katrina - I wish I had met your mom. I’ve heard so many stories of her from the Mets family and i can tell that she was loved GREATLY. She was known to me as Mets Mom.

And what a mother she must have been... you are one of the most open, kind and generous person we’ve ever met. I bet Irene is proud and knows that she done good. And Senorita Quesadilla would attest!

Thank you, Irene, for creating our special Mets Family. (And for the Mets family for letting us me be honorary members...)

It is with a heavy heart that I leave these words for Irene Jencius, but with the consolation of having had the honour to meet her, and the pleasure of having enjoyed her company.

On a personal note, but for many others too, fond memories of Irene will always first be around baseball, and the Mets. Even as a visitor, I've always felt at home at a ballgame, and Irene embodied that. Instantly welcoming, generous in spirit, with a great sense of fun, and a passion for her boys in orange and blue that was unmatched. So many precious moments with dear friends at ballgames for me simply don't happen without Irene's planning or generosity, and I'm eternally grateful for that.

My condolences go to all of Irene's family and friends at this difficult time, but especially to Katrina, whose own kindness and love of life in a person is the best legacy one could ever hope to leave.

"Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay.

But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all."
